Baby Boomers¡¯ Housing Planning Process for Their Elderly Life Based on the Grounded Theory

Abstract
This study attempts to explore factors that influence the elderly housing plan of the baby-boom generation who have different housing requirements and lifestyles compared to the existing elderly generation, and the process of the elderly housing planning. For this, the study analyzed the housing experience of the baby-boom generation and the process of preparing the elderly housing in a general perspective using a grounded theory approach. For this, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 baby boomers, and the data were collected and analyzed in the steps of the grounded theory methods. 15 categories of factors that influence the process of the baby boomers¡¯ elderly housing planning were reorganized by the paradigm model to understand the baby boomers¡¯ elderly housing planning process. The result showed that the central phenomenon of the process of baby boomers¡¯ elderly housing planning was "managing a role of a crowd nest." The process of preparing the elderly housing was "finding a comprise plan between managing the role of a crowd nest and realizing the housing aspiration." The baby-boom generation plays a role of the supporter for their parents and children but they do not expect their children to support their elderly lives and try to realize the desire for the elderly housing. In this process, they try to find an appropriate housing plan considering circumstances around them and their families. The categorization of such process of the baby boomers¡¯ elderly housing planning are consisted of five types: "multi-habi developing", "positively considering the elderly housing", "considering parents and children first", "maintaining the current housing" and "resolving the current situation first."
